Practicing skills in blocks makes them easier to learn, but harder to remember. When we’re learning a skill like shooting hoops in basketball, handwriting or even surgical techniques, the temptation is to practice in blocks of each type of motion. For instance, in learning to write, we’d do 100 perfect As, then 100 perfect Bs, etc.
Unfortunately, although research has shown that practicing like this helps us get better quicker, the effect is short-lived – it leads to worse retention than if we practice in mixed blocks.
